The Khan household is legendary for its lavish parties and its “khanawazi”. And much of the credit for those famous Bollywood parties that Sanjay ‘Tipu Sultan’ Khan throws goes to the gracious and fabulous hostess, his wife Zarine.
But there is more to Zarine than being the perfect hostess; she is also a celebrity chef having hosted the popular TV show Secrets and Spices in which she shared her family cooking prowess and secrets. Apparently, the show did so well that it was also aired in America and Iran.
But that’s not all. Zarine has also authored a popular and celebrated cookbook chronicling all the delectable dishes that she serves at home. That it went on to win “Best in the World” category at the prestigious Gourmand World Cook Book Awards in China, proves Zarine is an extraordinary chef.
So, when my Executive Editor, Tayunaz Merchant suggested the idea of doing a cover story on Zarine Khan and her family, I did not bat an eye-lid before giving her the go-ahead. In fact, I accompanied Tayunaz for the interview.
Besides getting a first-hand taste of the lavish spread the Khans are so famous for, Zarine, her son, actor Zayed and daughter, jewellery designer Farah, treated us with a generous dose of their family food legacy and secret recipes.
To be honest, it was not just Zarine who I was impressed with, I was also blown away by Zayed and Farah’s depth of knowledge and understanding of all things about food. Like me, I am sure you will devour every word as you turn the pages!
The most important lesson is that food is about memories. Like the Khan family get-togethers, eating for us should be a celebration.
While talking of celebrations, FoodFood Awards 2018 in Association with Marriott International and Media Partner BBC GoodFood India got off to a hugely successful start with Callebaut FoodFood Awards North 2018 & Chocolate Summit hosted by JW Marriott New Delhi Aerocity on June 26. Celebrating the best of the food and hospitality industry, it set the tone for a string of regional awards.
